Literature turns into music, school is transformed into a castle in the air, and the pupils become the artists’ accomplices
ART SPECIAL: offers students the rare opportunity to experience and influence the creation of art in collaboration with prominent artists. This interdisciplinary art project was initiated by the Hansa-Gymnasium, which is a participating institution in the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network and it is celebrating its fifth edition in 2010. ART SPECIAL: 2010 is dedicated to the idea of networking, reflected in this year’s project in which the school—in its capacity as a co-agent within the network “Bildungslandschaft Altstadt Nord” (BAN)—will utilize external sites belonging to the network partners. Twenty artists and seventeen student/artist teams will be active in ART SPECIAL: as well as fifty school students as patrons to the artists, as mediators between them and the school community as co-organisers and chroniclers. Together with the sound artist Erwin Stache, for example, lower school children are converting the drawing room of the Hansa-Gymnasium into an interactive sound space; or, one floor up, the writer Juli Zeh has allowed fragments of her writing to be turned into music by a group of sixth performers. Pupils from the Junior High School will be erecting a proverbial castle in the air in the schoolyard, and at the night school’s cafeteria walls a mural will be painted by pupils in collaboration with the painter, Peter Zimmermann. Literary Rooms will take shape—multimedia spaces created by young people with reference to the works or biographies of the respective authors, in which the latter will then conduct readings. Teachers and parents have also been integrated into the range of different activities.
